UKCISA wants to ensure that international students are represented in policy development and government strategy.
This free one-day event, held on 18 November 2019 at Woburn House in London, brought together international students from across the UK to share their experiences and influence policy. They heard from experts and explored diverse aspects of their experience, from the application process through to post-graduation. There was an opportunity to network with the wider sector at the evening reception, held at the British Library, celebrating the award-winning #WeAreInternational campaign.

Post-graduation and employability
A panel discussion led by international students and recent graduates exploring how the sector and government can work with students to enhance graduate employability and expand alumni network, with key discussion points:
- Work with businesses and employers in the UK, to help them understand the visa rules and restrictions; to support them to take international graduates through the new PSW visa or becoming Tier 2 sponsors
- Support the current student cohort who might not be eligible to apply for the 2-year PSW visa
- How institutions can improve their student career service by making information, advice and guidance tailored for international graduates

Anne Marie joined UKCISA in 2019 from the Association of Commonwealth Universities, where she was Director of Chevening, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office’s flagship global scholarship scheme.
Prior to that, Anne Marie has led on a range of educational programmes and projects promoting international mobility and intercultural exchange. At Universities UK International, she developed the first government-funded UK Strategy for Outward Mobility, and established the Go International programme to build capacity and influence institutional change in UK universities to increase the proportion of UK-domiciled students with international experience.
At the National Centre for Languages, she directed the development of new National Occupational Standards in Translation and Interpreting in conjunction with language service practitioners and employers, and led on the National Networks for Translation and Interpreting for the Routes into Languages programme. Before moving into the education sector, Anne Marie spent several years in the language services industry managing high profile accounts with multinational engineering and pharmaceutical companies.
Anne Marie is a linguist, with a first degree in Modern Languages from Anglia Ruskin University and a postgraduate translation qualification from University of Westminster. She continues to support the professional standards in the language professions and is a member of the Qualifications and Standards Committee of the National Register of Public Service Interpreters.
Dr Knut Schroeder GP, Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in General Practice, Health Information Specialist and Founder, Expert Self Care Ltd
Knut's main aim is to help people make better-informed decisions about their health.
Knut is author of 'Diagnosing Your Health Symptoms for Dummies' and now makes reliable health and wellbeing information easily available mainly to students through free-to-download mobile apps.
Together with student health experts and students from the University of Bristol he created the 'Student Health App', which is listed on the NHS Apps Library and freely available to every student and university in the UK. His 'distrACT' app, which supports young people who self-harm and may feel suicidal, won the 2019 British Medical Association 'Patient Information Award' for wellbeing. In September 2019 he launched the 'Student Health Matters' app, developed in partnership with – and on behalf of – the Irish Student Health Association.
He currently works on a new 'International Student App (UK)' providing practical support for students new to the UK, due to be released in November 2019.

Vincenzo (Enzo) Raimo is a global higher education specialist who has held senior roles at the universities of Nottingham (International Director) and Reading (Pro-Vice Chancellor for Global Engagement).
He is co-author of the guide ‘Managing international student recruitment agents' and 'Power and control: managing agents for international student recruitment in higher education'.
He was until August 2019 Chair of the UCAS International Advisory Group and the UKCISA nominee on the UCAS Council.
In October 2019 Enzo joined Unilodgers, the world’s largest student housing hub, as Chief Relationship Officer. He retains academic associations through a Visiting Fellowship at the University of Reading and as adjunct Professor of Global Higher Education at the Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology.
Claire O'Leary is Assistant Director (Head of Internationalisation, Student Experience, Immigration and Welcome), Student Opportunity, University of Warwick
With over 20 years’ experience in international student support, advice and management, Claire leads the Student Experience section within the Student Opportunity Division at Warwick which comprises Immigration; Tier 4 compliance; Student Internationalisation; all student Welcome and International Student Support.
A passionate advocate for internationalisation of the student learning experience and for integration, Claire is Vice-Chair of the EAIE expert community, Mobility Advising. She regularly presents at EAIE conferences and is an EAIE academy trainer. Claire has also organised the Warwick/UKCISA Integration Summits for all UK institutions interested in promoting greater integration and intercultural learning amongst their student communities.
Claire is the programme manager for Warwick’s Welcome Week for all new students across all nationalities and study levels. Claire leads on Tier 4 immigration compliance strategy and policy for Warwick and is co-chair of the Immigration Compliance Network, a sector organisation for colleagues working in compliance, which Claire co-founded.
Claire has served two terms of office as a trustee on the board of the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA). She delivers training on running orientation programmes for international students on UKCISA’s national training programme. Claire has recently completed her Master’s degree in Intercultural Communication at the University of Warwick. Her Bachelor’s degree was in English and French from the University of Leeds, which involved a year abroad, working as a language teacher.
Willow is a third-year international student in BA English and Philosophy at Royal Holloway, University of London.
In her second year of studies, she was in the role of International Students' Representative before serving for two years as the Vice President (Welfare & Diversity) at Royal Holloway Students' Union.
Martin Hookham is Head of International Office at the University of Sussex. He leads the International Office at Sussex, with strategic oversight for international recruitment and internationalisation.
Since joining Sussex in 2011, Martin has restructured and expanded the international team to cover a wider diversity of markets including the opening four overseas offices in China, Nigeria and Malaysia and supporting the establishment of an international partnerships function and oversight of student exchanges. In addition, Martin has been instrumental in establishing an on-campus intercultural annual event and undertaking pioneering work with the Guardian Online during 2015 in a feature called the Global Student.
Prior to joining the University of Sussex, Martin was Head of International Office for five years at the University of Roehampton, working in markets throughout Europe, North America, Africa, Asia and Australasia. In addition, Martin had oversight of international student support, student mobility and strategic partnerships.
His work includes leading team that have won the EuroAsia Award for Most Preferred UK University (2018), Tencent Award for Most Favoured UK Univerity for Chinese families (2018); HEIST Award for Best International Initiative (2016); shortlisted for a Times Higher Award for Best International Recruitment Strategy (2015) and Best Education Marketing (2006). A graduate of Product Design from the University of Huddersfield, Martin also completed an MBA in Higher Education Management at the Institute of Education, University College London in 2012.
Martin is a member of the British Universities International Liaison Association (BUILA) Executive where he represents the views of the sector in relation to the governments Study UK campaign and key liaison with the British Council.
Wahida Ashiq is the founder of Great British Mag - the UK’s only digital lifestyle magazine for international students.
The mission of the magazine is to be the international students “Best British Friend” by answering their questions and inspiring them at every stage of their student journey.
Matthew has been a Programme Officer – UK at Chevening for a few years, being the lead contact for universities and Chevening scholars in southwest England and south of Wales.
As a Programme Officer, Matthew has worked on various engagement strands which include Chevening Conference at University of Bristol, Sustainability Lecture with University of Nottingham & Chevening Changemakers Photography Exhibition to name a few.
Erica Ramos is the Vice President Union Development at the National Union of Students (NUS). She was formerly the National Executive Council’s 2nd Place for International Students.
She ran on a platform of supporting Students’ Unions, championing international students and ensuring Students’ Unions have the tools to create a better world.
Stephanie currently leads Universities UK’s work on immigration.
During her time at Universities UK she has also worked on the Teaching Excellence Framework, the student information landscape and the demand for graduates and higher-level skills.
Prior to joining Universities UK Steph worked as a Policy Advisor to the vice-chancellor at Bath Spa University and was a Sabbatical Officer at Bristol Students' Union, serving on the University's Board of Trustees.
Steph holds both an undergraduate Master's degree and a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Bristol.
Jim Dickinson is an Associate Editor at Wonkhe where he takes a particular interest in students, governance and higher education regulation and leads on our work with students’ unions.
Jim is a former long standing director at the National Union of Students, where he led on students’ union development, campaigns and political strategy, student engagement and governance.
He was also CEO at the students’ union at UEA in Norwich, acting as the lead staff member on behalf of the elected student officers of the union providing strategic management for the union’s charitable and commercial vehicles and policy support for the officers.
Jim has served as a Governor in both further and higher education and the voluntary sector, and is a regular contributor to AdvanceHE’s leadership skills for governance programme. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts, and an obsessive fan of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Joy Elliott-Bowman is the Director of Policy and Development for Independent Higher Education.
She currently leads work on the secretariat for the APPG for International Students and on policy for Exporting Education UK, both supported by Independent Higher Education.
Prior to joining Independent HE, Joy worked with the National Union of Students as their resident expert in immigration, Tier 4 policy and international students. Joy has worked in the education sector in the UK and Canada for over 10 years.
Whiskey Chow is a London-based performance artist and Chinese drag king. Her art practice engages with broadly defined political issues, covering a range of related topics.
Whiskey studied MA Contemporary Art Practice (Performance) at the Royal College of Art and graduated in 2017. She was elected as the Co-President of Students’ Union at the Royal College of Art, and served for two tenures from 2017 to 2019. Bringing insight from her own experience as an international student, Whiskey helped to improve and to shape the policy and culture at the RCA through representing the voice and interests of international students while working closely with the international students’ community.
As an artist and activist, Whiskey is now a visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art, she has also been giving artist talk and contributing to panels at various UK HE institutions.
Abhiyaan Malhotra is currently an international student, originally from India, and having completed his initial study years in Lithuania, he moved to Wales in 2017.
Abhiyaan is a Masters student in Applied Psychology. Alongside this he is also doing a PGCE PCET in Health and Social Care at University of Wales Trinity Saint David.
Experiencing various cultures and being able to study in various countries and in various different languages has changed his outlook to different everyday issues. While at universities he established support systems for international and Erasmus students in higher education through Erasmus Student Network, which is one of Europe’s largest volunteer student organisation, that helps students integrate while on exchange and develop themselves for the future career market.
Abhiyaan believes that: "One of the main things to look out for when being on exchange is “culture shock” and “reverse culture shock”. Alongside the cultural learning, it is essential for international students to get internship and employability opportunities, so the choice then lays in the students hands, if they want to continue their career in the UK or their home or any other country, they do have the relevant experience for the same."
Stella Wang is a Public Policy graduate of the University of Bristol and now works at the university's Careers Service.
She has previously served as an intern in the United Nations and later started her own business on a graduate entrepreneur visa and then worked in the voluntary sector combating social isolation, amongst other roles.
Dhruv Krishnaraj came to the UK (from India) to do an MSc in Management in 2014. Having had ambitions of using this degree from a global institution, he wanted to gain work experience to enhance his skills.
Having faced the problem of job search in the UK, he came up with a unique idea for developing a job-search platform specifically for international students.
He was given the opportunity by the University of Bristol to start Student Circus on the Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur visa.
Over the last 3 years, he has worked on growing Student Circus with an aim of helping every international student in the UK. The platform now works with 35+ universities and is used by 30,000+ international students in the UK. His effort to solving the employability problem has led to the company winning various prestigious awards, including being picked as one of the top emerging EdTech companies in 2018 by JISC.
Rex Béchu came from France in 2016 to study Politics and International Relations at the University of Sheffield.
She was the International Students' Officer at Sheffield Students' Union in 2018/2019.
