Russell Group Students’ Unions and UKCISA seek to understand international student experiences

06 February 2025

Russell Group Students’ Unions are working in partnership with the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) to carry out research into the international student experience.

Gathering evidence from international students at Russell Group Universities, who make up over 40% of all international students studying in the UK, the comprehensive, mixed-method survey and focus groups will ask questions on a wide range of areas that affect international students, from visas and fees, to studying and living in the UK.

Through seeking student input and valuing and sharing their experiences, Russell Groups Students’ Unions and UKCISA seek to empower international students to have a direct impact on the policies that affect their lives.

Bakhtawar Javed, International Students Officer at Bristol SU commented,

“Unfortunately, international students often find their worth assessed in narrow, economic terms.

Our Russell Group Students’ Union Manifesto outlined our key asks of the sector and government to ensure that international students feel valued and supported. The findings from these surveys will support us in continuing to share the positive contribution international students make to our campuses and wider society, as well as discussing the barriers they face through the immigration system.

Generally, policies are made by the government without consideration for our international students. I hope the data we gather will help us present their stories and provide us with valuable insights to affect change.”

Head of Engagement and Partnerships at UKCISA Yinbo Yu shared:

“At UKCISA we advocate for a positive experience for all international students studying in the UK, from pre-arrival to post-graduation. We raise awareness of the contributions that international students make to our communities by amplifying their voices through our #WeAreInternational programme.

Having up to date, reliable, evidence and real stories from students who are willing to share their experiences with us are essential to building the case for change.”

The survey is currently open and will close on Friday 28 February 2025, with findings expected to be released in late spring.
