Increase to maintenance requirements for Students from 2025

12 September 2024

A Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules was published by the Home Office on Tuesday 10 September and can be found here: Statement of changes to the Immigration Rules: HC 217, 10 September 2024 - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

We want to highlight one important change in this Statement for those applying for immigration permission under the ‘Student’ route on or after 2 January 2025

The amounts of money Students will be required to have available as evidence of meeting the maintenance requirements, if applying under the Student route on or after 2 January 2025 will increase. The new amounts are as follows:

- £1483 per month in London (up to a maximum of 9 months)
- £1136 per month outside London (up to a maximum of 9 months)

The maximum amount of money that can be offset for accommodation will also be increased in line with the changes to the maintenance requirement. This will be £1483 for those applying under the Student route on or after 2 January 2025.

For an explanation of what  ‘financial requirements’ for those applying under the Student route means please see our information here: UKCISA - international student advice and guidance - Student route: eligibility and requirements

The Home Office has produced a factsheet explaining the changes (attached). Factsheet - international student maintenance increase.pdf

If there are any other changes in this Statement which are relevant to students, we will provide summary of these once we have analysed the changes in detail.
