What is UKCISA?

The UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) is the UK's national advisory body serving the interests of international students and those who work with them. We have been supporting international students, universities, colleges and students' unions for nearly 50 years.

We are a small organisation of 17 staff based in London and have almost 500 members including all UK universities, many further education colleges and students' unions.

Our aims

  • To increase support for international education and raise awareness of its values and benefits.
  • To promote greater student mobility and reduce obstacles and barriers to it.
  • To encourage best practice, professional development and the highest quality of institutional support for international students throughout the education sector.

What we do

We:

  • Monitor and influence government and education sector policy through close contact with senior officials, policy makers, MPs, partner organisations and sector bodies throughout the UK.
  • Produce regular news, blogs, briefings and publications (including the UKCISA manual) to keep members and students up to date on current legislation, regulations and resources.
  • Provide an advice line (for members and students/members of the public) to assist individuals with complex questions or problems.
  • Deliver training to our members to enable them to advise students directly in their institutions.
  • Provide opportunities for professional development including our annual conference which brings members together to share good practice and the PG Cert. in International Student Advice (with the University of Nottingham).
  • Support a network of members committed to the ideals of international education and the highest standards of international student support.
  • Initiate and encourage projects and research to enhance our understanding of international student education in the UK.
  • Work indirectly and in partnership with others to encourage greater mobility from, as well as to, the UK.
